Fireworks that are being illegally discharged can be reported to the Metro Police Control Centre on 0860 765 423, or the SAPS Emergency Control Centre on 10111.
In emergencies, the public may contact the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 107 (or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone).
General enquiries can be directed to the City’s Corporate Call Centre 0on 860 103 089 or the Disaster Risk Management Centre on 080 911 4357.
Citizens are urged to not use so-called Chinese lanterns. These candle-powered airborne lanterns are not only illegal but also considered a fire hazard. What’s more, the floating lamps resemble that of emergency flairs, which the NSRI is required to investigate and thus is a waste of valuable and expensive resources.
BECAREFUL ABOUT ALL THE ANIMALS OUT THERE!
Make sure you keep your animals safely locked up, stay close to them and keep them far away from any fireworks.
It is important that your pets have identification collars. If they get out and are picked up by the SPCA, they can quickly be reunited with their owners.
Get calming tablets from a vet to keep pets calm during noisy periods.
Keep the TV or radio on or lock them in a safe room in the house with plenty of food and water.
