It could definitely say this wasn’t the greatest sporting weekend for the favoured sides. Chelsea, Liverpool, Sharks, Eagles and in my eyes Province, couldn’t find a win in there respective games. At least one can say that the Cobra’s are flying the South African flag mighty high right now!
Liverpool were most unfortunate in there game against Sunderland, as Darren Bent’s blast from just inside the box, deflected off a Liverpool-branded beach ball into the goals. It seems that the beach ball had been thrown onto the pitch supposedly by a Liverpool fan. I still think the referee should have disallowed the goal, nothing you can do about it now though. Chelsea’s lose sees them slip one point behind Manchester United, this has put United back on top by 1 point.
The Currie Cup had two very close games. Sharks V Cheetahs and WP V The Bulls. Both games were lost by 2 points in the dying minutes of the each game. A drop goal by Jacques-Louis Potgieter with just under a minute left on the clock, sealed a victory for the Cheetahs against the home side. Final Score: 21 – 23. The other semi final saw another huge battle as the Springbok filled Bulls side came to the Cape. The first half was sloppy from the Province players as they seemed to want to kick everything away. They didn’t seem like a confident side. Morne Steyn was on top form with the boot leaving newlands with a 100% kicking record on the day. A great turn around by the Province side in the second half saw the home side turn the heat up against the Bulls scoring a well worked team try by my man of the match Gio Aplon. It just wasn’t enough as Fijian wing Sireli Naqekeluvuki’s high tackle cost the game. Allowing a 50m penalty from the corner to be slotted by Morne Steyn. I still think the highlight of the game for me though was when Schalk Burger up ended Fourie Du Preez in one of the biggest tackles of the year(I think I saw the reply about 15 times on the big screen at Newlands) Final Score: 19 – 21
The IPL championship is nearing the semi finals as the Cobra’s need a win today against the Dehli Daredevils to make it through to the semi’s. While the Eagles fought hard but couldn’t match the mammoth total of the 219 set by Trinidad and Tobago.
So all in all, a good weekend for sport, not in terms of results. WP bid farewell to Luke Watson who has had an amazing season for the Stormers and for WP. Dick Muir gets appointed the Lions head coach, Alex Ferguson gets charged by the FA, Bulls Vs Cheetahs Currie Cup final and Jenson Button winning the F1 title this year… Well done Jenson:)
