SHORTSTRAW has just released the seventh single, ‘IF I’M THE TIDE’ from their THOSE MEDDLING KIDS collective. The lyrics of the song were written by Alastair in three parts over the course of a holiday with his girlfriend. The chorus came about while they were lying in bed in a super dodgy hotel in Bangkok; convinced it was a brothel, trying to ignore the weird sounds coming from next door. The first verse was during a silent period after a stupid fight after missing a ferry, and the second verse was after a harrowing ferry ride on some rough seas. Back home, the band threw some ideas over a riff from Tom, and the song was done in 10 minutes.
The video is directed by SHORTSTRAW’s own TOMMY ROCKET (Tom Revington). Tom had the interesting idea of shooting the video like an Instagram story, which just so happens to be his new addiction. The band hasn’t seen other videos done in this style before, so jumped at the chance to make it happen.
Tom decided to tell a love story between a bullied boy and an image conscious girl through the medium of an Insta story. It also delves into the issue of bullying and body shaming through a medium that a lot of kids will be able to relate to, whilst being lighthearted at the same time.
“The video takes you right into high school. It’s a lovey dovey song reminiscent of an awkward high school romance, and seeing it play out from the point of views of the characters will hopefully make you feel like you’re part of the story. We’re also getting so used to seeing our lives play out through our social media stories, so it should easy for someone to get what is happening.”
