Netflix recently released the official trailer for the upcoming controversial documentary ‘Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator’. The feature explores the dramatic rise and fall of Bikram Choudhury – the founder of Bikram Yoga – from the rise of his global empire to disturbing accusations of abuse.
Bikram Choudhury is an Indian-born yoga teacher, self-proclaimed guru and the founder of hot yoga – a series of 26 hatha yoga postures done in a room with a temperature of 40 °C. Choudhury rose to fame in the 80s and built an empire from of his self-named yoga practice but later in his career, the famous instructor would face allegations including sexual harassment, sexual assault and various forms of racial discrimination and homophobia.
According to reports, five women have sued Bikram Choudhury. Two lawsuits accusing Bikram Choudhury of rape were filed in May 2013, in which one woman alleges sexual battery, false imprisonment, discrimination, harassment and other counts in addition to the rape allegation. The women also describe a cult-like atmosphere where members of Bikram’s inner circle are encouraged to help him find young women to assault.
Choudhury fled to India in 2017 after the Los Angeles County Court ordered he to pay $7 million to his former lawyer, Minakshi Jafa-Boden.
