Rainer Schimpf has worked as a dive tour operator in South Africa for over 15 years but this past February the experienced diver encountered something rare and rather frightening.
In perfect sea conditions, Rainer and his team set off to document a sardine run – a naturally occurring event where gannets, penguins, seals, dolphins, whales and sharks all work together to gather the fish into bait balls. The team films the expedition for educational and environmental purposes. But in a dramatic turn of events, the video captures Rainer nearly being swallowed by a whale off the Port Elizabeth Harbour.
Watch the incredible clip and Rainer detail his experience below.
