Village Idiot’s weekly winter specials – A roaring review of Cape Town’s favourite watering hole

Village Idiot's weekly winter specials - A roaring review of Cape Town's favourite watering hole

The Village Idiot is a vintage neighbourhood bar and restaurant that enthusiastically embraces South African braai culture and consistently looks for local inspiration for their menu.

All winter long, The Village Idiot has been running some incredible weekly food and drink specials and we were lucky enough to be invited to sample a variety of their scrumptious meals that specifically make up their popular specials list. The Village Idiot‘s cosy layout offers patrons an inviting atmosphere – with warm hues, rugged textures and lavish booths, it’s the perfect place to spend time with friends and family on a cold day or night.

The restaurant is casual but swanky in its own right and it’s the only place you’ll find biltong on the menu! It’s the kind of hangout that encourages you to get comfy with your drink next to the crackling fireplace, shoot some pool, or enjoy the match if the month on multiple mounted TV screens or their large drop-down projector. And on Friday and Saturday nights, the “watering hole” takes it up a notch with live music and in-house DJs that carry the vibe well into the early hours of the morning.

But it’s their winter food specials that we walked through the door for last week and where we learned that the Village Idiot has become known for their melting pot of traditional and modern South African flavours smashed together with loads of taste – and each of their weekly winter specials highlights just that.

We started off with the Biltong and local Charcuterie board served with cashew nuts, decadent cranberry jam and the freshest roosterkoek along with the local artisanal cheese board which came with chargrilled citrus and marmalade. Each had a distinctly South African flair from the beautifully baked roosterkoeke and the finest tasting cured meat and biltong.

Our main course got me particularly excited as I waited to try out the Mrs Ball’s Boerewors Burger. I love boerewors, I love boerewors rolls and love Mr’s Balls, so this burger had to be a dream come true. Along with this mystical burger, we decided to try their Tata Ma Chance Ribs (which they are practically famous for) and their signature Jack Daniels chicken wings wich stars as one of their Wednesday specials: bottomless wings and chips!

The Boerewors burger was indeed a melting pot of flavour – the undeniably tasty boerewors patty paired with the perfectly caramelised onions and marmalade made for a truly unique culinary experience. The Tata Ma Chance ribs and Jack Daniels taxi wings are both a Village Idiot prize! We relished in 200g of perfectly basted, succulent ribs and devoured every bit of those sticky wings.

Another aspect to The Village Idiot’s menu that I simply loved was the all the South African inspired side dishes from ‘corn on the carb’ to biltong dusted chips and pap with charcuterie gravy. The same can be said for their list of desserts where you can find all your home favourites form Malva pudding to Melktert and even Coffee and Biscuits.

All menu items reviewed above are available on special throughout the week (except dessert items) at The Village Idiot on 32 Loop Street, Cape Town CDB.
