Making an attempt to get your jersey back from your ex or baking your cookies at exactly *361* degrees aren’t the only ways to feel like a badass this winter… The True Roots team is back on the 28th with another soulful party called the Motorcycle Diaries, and this time it’s evident the venue will be saturated with the rebellious energy of a biker gang or what the theme describes as Biker Badass.
The intentions of True Roots aren’t necessarily placed with riling up a horde of outlaws with great music and liver juice. Since the beginning of these events what has made it special is the fact that people (well, most) are letting loose of their inhibitions for a night fully knowing that their partying is making a difference in somebody’s life. No, not the people they’re lip dancing with but impoverished children based in the townships of Cape Town, particularly Mfuleni. It’s not only through parties where the public has an opportunity to get involved with the upliftment of disadvantaged communities. True Roots invites volunteers to join some community activities and in return, you skip the phases of Hell’s Angel, Badboy Jones, and Don Chambers tickets by receiving free entrance to their events. At the heart of True Roots is the idea of “party with a purpose” which ultimately elevates the party experience from a mindless night out to a celebration designed to perpetuate positive transformation and consciousness in our society
Something that has been impressively consistent with True Roots is the choice of their acts. In the past, we’ve seen acts such as Bakai, Astrafunk and The Space Cats, Paul Waxon and DJ Mighty. The puppeteers of the dance floor this time includes one of the most loved DJ’s in our city in K-$ and Zanasi Wifi, but more enthralling is the juxtaposition with live bands like Hezron Chetty and Floors. I remember there was a time I tried to walk past a stage at CTEMF earlier this year, and I literally couldn’t as I was pulled swiftly towards the front of the stage by an angelic voice decorated with chromatic synths, and the name of the band that put me through that moment is called Floors. A must see for any local really interested in unique sounds, and for the group to be playing at an event like The Motorcycle Diaries is a real treat. Hezron Chetty, a mad violinist who just drips talent with each stroke will also be gracing the stage
Of course, you don’t have to come with a deafening Harley to the event just because the theme is Biker Badass. Although an open mind, your beautiful smile and your best badass outfit are all that is required.
