Mayor Dan Plato recently confirmed that the city of Cape Town will host a charity match between two of the greatest tennis players of all time, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The Grand Slam champions will face off at 8 PM on February 7, 2020, at the Cape Town Stadium in an effort to raise funds for education in Africa. Federer and Nadal will aim to set a world record for the most attendees at a tennis match.

This Match in Africa is a dream comes true. I will play in my mother’s home country against my toughest rival and friend Rafa Nadal.” – Roger Federer

The current attendance record for a tennis match is at 35 681. The record was set at an exhibition game in Brussels between Belgian Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams in 2010. Cape Town Stadium has a capacity of 55 000 and that’s where Nadal and Federer are hoping to break the record.

The excitement doesn’t end there – Cape Town Stadium will also host a celebrity/pro doubles match prior to the main spectacle in which Federer and Bill Gates, the founder of the Microsoft Corporation, will team up to face Nadal and South African comedian Trevor Noah!

Tickets will go on sale in early September. Read more on the latest local news.
