Super Bowl

South African talent was featured again at this year’s Super Bowl championship in the US on Sunday 7 February 2021.

The annual television and sporting event has also become a prime marketing event, with Super Bowl ads costing advertisers upwards of $5 million (more than R70 million) for a 30-second slot.

This year the Super Bowl aired a Pringles commercial that was produced by global advertising agency Grey Group with South African Cuanan Cronwright (who is a group creative director at Grey New York) taking the creative lead on the project.

The advert features two frustrated astronauts stranded in the ocean on a lunar pod. They have returned back to earth after a space mission and cannot get the attention of both Mission Control and a passing ship – because both crews are distracted by constructing stacks of different flavoured Pringles chips.

The piece was filmed in Cape Town harbour, as well as Granger Bay and Goodwood.  One of the astronauts is played by South African actor Waldemar Schultz, (7de Laan, Kissing Booth, Die Byl.)

This isn’t the first time South African talent has shone at the Super Bowl – in 2019, South African Melusi Mhlungu wrote a Kraft-Heinz’s Super Bowl commercial for their Devour frozen food, which went rival.

Actor Waldemar Schultz featured in another South African produced Heinz advert that was also a hit at that year’s Super Bowl. The 2016 Heinz ad featured a stampede of Dachshund dogs dressed up as Heinz condiments.
