Treat Yourself on a Monday Night at Asoka!
Hosting some of Cape Town’s most eclectic eateries, amongst its hill and fairy lights, Kloof Street hides away Asoka, right under towering Table Mountain. While the restaurant is known for its tapas menu and cocktails, winter nights have become a treat with their Hungry Monday Special: pick three courses from a set menu for only R200 per person!
As you sip on a cocktail and take in the Asian décor of the transformed twentieth century home, the menu before you boasts chevre croquettes, truffle polenta chips, grass fed beef sliders, and crispy duck tempura. The butter chicken, enough for two people, accompanied with roti, sambal and raita could fix any winter blues, and the subtlety at which the Norwegian salmon is poached and glazed with miso-yaki, sitting on a bed of roasted aubergine, chickpeas, ponzu mayo and pickled ginger, is reason enough to go visit Asoka!
The menu, designed after the five elements of earth, water, wind, fire and nirvana, satisfies every taste bud, from the ravenous carnivore, to the sweet-toothed kid; the international fusion of cuisines is just right for everyone. The Monday night special has put together a combination of these sharing plates in one tasting menu, divided into three courses, each course with an option of four dishes.
For those who like to stick to healthier vegetarian options, Asoka caters for you too, with a baby spinach salad dressed with more roasted aubergine, miso-yaki, parmesan shavings, baby corn and sesame. The top of the menu offers chilli garlic scented warm broccoli florets with fresh fior di latte, and mushroom tacos. Although, the main attraction for any vegetarian would have to be the mezze platter, served on a wooden board, topped with baba ganoush, tzatziki, fior di latte mozzarella, marinated olives, roasted mushrooms, stuffed peppadews and pickled vegetables, paired with chilli and garlic crostini.
Our suggestion? When you are too lazy to cook after a long Monday, throw on some clothes, grab a friend, or a date, order one Hungry Monday special, and then add a few more pickings from their regular menu: at the top of that list sits the crispy tacos! Crispy tortilla, fried to golden perfection, topped with citrus marinated fish of the day, usually tuna, sour cream and a perfect slice of avocado, in one, or two perfect bites!
As you start to unwind, settling into the new week, indulge in a little dessert and end the evening off right. You cannot go wrong with any of the desserts: crispy churros with cardamom chocolate sauce, coconut panna cotta, salted caramel cheesecake, or everyone’s favourite, a dark chocolate fondant with the perfect centre, strawberry meringue, caramel miso ice cream and toasted coconut crumbs.
Not to be too complimentary, but Asoka is easily rated a 4 out 5 on our dining scale!
