SA photographer-turned-director Travys Owen has stamped his signature style on UK artist Denai Moore’s latest music video, adding yet another beautiful piece of work to his portfolio, and propelling the work of other South African creatives onto the international scene.
No stranger to directing visually striking videos, Travys made use of the desolate Tankwa Karoo landscape as a dramatic backdrop to highlight the artist, dressed in
an intense kaleidoscopic colour of costume. With the sharp eye for detail and manipulation of light and movement that is unique in his design and photographic work, the effect is a visual anomaly of richness and loneliness.
Travys says of the video:
“The Tankwa Karoo has always held a certain mystical and unending beauty for me.
It exhibits a very specific colour pallet, which I am always drawn to in my work. It has a certain subtle, surrealness, which I think in my eyes, is unmatched anywhere else in the world.
This aesthetic paired with the ethereal beauty of Denai and mixed with a song equally so, paved the way for a cinematic process, which was incredibly enjoyable and visually satisfying. I live for these moments where a collaborative team comes together.”
And what a team! Curated and produced by The Video Cartel, the video is a spectacular showpiece for the South African creative industry. Stylist Gavin Mikey Collins worked with local designer pieces to dress and accessorize Moore, in luscious colours, textures and structures to offset the moonlike landscape. Coupled with a playful use of local flora, the result is a stunning, yet dreamy, visual interpretation of the track.
