Top 25 South African Female Artists


This is your Captain speaking! I’d like to welcome you lovely people back to the second output for my very special editorial pieces “The List”. With the first getting so much love, we thought we’d hold focus on artist exposure with a piece which took us almost two weeks to put together. With the first post, South Africa’s Top 25 Artists; 25 & Under, having set the bar quite high we decided on something quite vibrant.

Once again, this is #GonZo #ReportingForDuty with this gem of a list: Top 25 South African Female Artists. 

NB: These selections were made purely based on personal assessment of originality and presence and understand the significance of other entities meeting the criteria (which we would love to know about). With that being said here is the checklist followed: Any genre, DJ/Producer, female, (if duo or more) at least one member female, known as an SA artist or export. 

25 Dre’Ama

Short Description: Teknotribe regular and one of the faces of the female psytrance movement in Johannesburg, Melanie Martin has become a force which not much can keep up to for little under a decade. With her alias TANK GIRL known to have its own cult following as well, Dre’Ama is the perfect choice to showcase what hard work looks like.

Short description: Another Teknotribe resident and Johannesburg export, Natalia Roux is nothing short of special. Having the ear for her music, she has become a household name with her ability to slot into any time slot for both her Techno & Psychedelic aliases. With many hours behind her projects, Natalia has earned her stripes in a way which shows that being a jack of all trades can make you untouchable at times.

She is known to push the envelope way past the scope of her audience and can be seen easily in every performance. Short Description: Not to be confused with the 90s Rock Band, Nicci is what I could only explain as that little voice at the back of your subconscious. Her artistry is bold and has an oddly calming volatility which only gets better with every view. Her production knows no bounds and speaks for itself, with her EP put together with Thor Rixon making it into the series Broad City.

Short Description: Professional DJ, vocalist, songwriter & professional mermaid, Thalia is the marionette pulling the strings in the Johannesburg underground scene. Co-host of Mix FM 93.8’s Sunset Dance with Al Gray, her work in radio shows she has a good grasp of the music community on a national scale. This bit of work alone shows that she has a deeper understanding of everything music across multiple genres.

Short description: The most recognizable female face of Cape Town’s Mechanik Records roster and the queen SA’s night time full-on foothold, Nicci Nabal is as brilliant as she is ruthless behind the decks. Also signed to Chris Hoy’s Nexus Media label locally she is a passionate artist who is a well-known face amongst all artists in Cape Town. Her work ethic, energy and knowledge as an artist has earned a lot of much deserved recognition and in turn slots on some of SA’s biggest psytrance lineups such as Alien Safari, Jungala, Earthdance, Transfari and many more.

Short description: The first word that comes to mind when listening to Ella G is Cheeky. Her talent as both an artist and producer has turned Jami Ella Gavin into Ella G, one of Johannesburg’s most exciting DnB prospects. If there’s one thing you can take away from her performances is that she refuses to lock herself down to a specific sub-genre but with this still maintains her unique drive and sound.

A much deeper palate which deserved a deeper explanation, Natalie-Rose Perel is someone to look for in dark times where inspiration is needed.

A radio host on Reform Radio & writer for Texx & The City, ANG is nothing short of dynamic in everything she does. A person who understands the hustle of the music industry she is highly respected for her work and is one of the few artists I personally look to for inspiration.

Nonku isn’t as underground it may seem as she has effectively bridged the gap between underground culture and mainstream media ultimately summed into one word, SUPERBALIST.

Short Description: Pamm Legg is a Garden Route born artist who has dominated the psytrance scene both locally and internationally like no one else for years on end. With an ever-evolving and adaptive behaviour to her performances, she is one of the few artists, like Thalia & Senjo who is able to slot into any time on any floor because of her experience. As a good friend, I have come to see her for what she truly is, a beast with the most amazing stage presence and a quality output unmatched by anyone on her level. She dominates and owns her craft and from what I’ve picked up is due to one thing. She enjoys every second of what she does.

Short Description: Ms.Wololo herself is far beyond the realms of music at this point as she is now regarded more as a voice than anything. Babes Wodumo is the Gqom queen and won’t be able to be stripped of that accolade because she is that good, that fresh and exciting, that unexpectedly refreshing and at such a young age only has more to offer.

Her sound has is an amalgamation of Rnb with hints of Jazz influences to be described in the simplest terms as “Future Soul”. In her own words, she delivers “a trademark mix of whip appeal and urgency that makes it heartfelt and sensuous at the same time” which is the only way you could understand the raw emotion brought upon by this artist.
