These are the 117 new emojis approved for 2020


The non-profit organisation, Unicode Consortium announced late last month its plans to release 117 new emojis in 2020, bringing the total amount of official emojis to 3 304. According to Emojipedia, new additions include bubble tea, a smiling face with a tear, bottle-feeding parents and the transgender flag. A revamped hugging emoji, which shows a greater sense of empathy than the previous hugging emoji will also be added.

Further additions include a pinched finger gesture which is commonly referred to as an “Italian hand gesture” plus a variety of new, gender-inclusive symbols like a gender-neutral person/woman in a tuxedo, as well as a gender-neutral person/man in a veil – these additions, were reportedly proposed by Google. The new gender-inclusive emojis add to an existing 138 gender-neutral emojis added in late 2019 as part of Emoji 12.1.
