The British government’s controversial crackdown on internet porn has officially begun. The UK will impose stringent ID checks across all major online porn platforms this year.

The government confirmed that the new age verification for online pornography will be in full swing as of July onwards. Major commercial providers of online porn must, by then, implement the new age checks or risk nation-wide sanctions and even have their payment services seized and withdrawn.

The new age verification system will involve the use of ID documents such as passports. Alternatively, adults can purchase an internet porn pass. Opponents of the idea believe that at this day and age, people will find new technology to get around that new proposal just to prevent them from going on such adult staples as Loveplugs and PornHub to get their daily porn fix

Adult content is currently far too easy for children to access online. The introduction of mandatory age verification is a world first, and we’ve taken the time to balance privacy concerns with the need to protect children from inappropriate content.” – Margot James, Minister for Digital UK

While some activists have voiced their concern over how the government’s robust approach will impact the public’s right to privacy and free speech on the internet, the British government claims to have addressed privacy concerns by ensuring that online “age verification providers will meet GDPR requirements.”

With that said, the announcement itself was a total flop – the news was released by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport via an email that ultimately leaked the private contact details of over 300 recipients.

So much for security…
