South Africa ranked as the second country in the world with the most accurate COVID-19 news

According to the Covid19 Infodemics Observatory website, South Africa currently ranks as the second country in the world with the most accurate and legitimate reporting on COVID-19. South Africa scored native reliability of 78.29% beaten by Singapore with a score of 90.72%. The Covid19 Infodemics Observatory is a website dedicated to monitoring and tracking the spread of fake news directly related to the new pandemic.

The analysis collected data from over 100-million public messages screened the reliability from the URL of so-called ‘reliable news sources’, tallied the average amount of unverified posts per day from each country as well as the activity of unverified social bots.

About 100 million public messages have been collected and analyzed to understand the digital response in online social media to COVID-19 outbreak. Specifically, we used machine learning techniques to quantify: collective sentiment and psychology, social bot pollutionn and news reliability.”

Under South Africa’s Disaster Management Act, lockdown regulations strictly prohibit the spread of any and all false and unverified information pertaining the COVID-19 pandemic. The country has criminalised the spread of misinformation and any South African found to be distributing misinformation or fake news may be fined and/or imprisoned for up to six months.

Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter have also joined the fight against fake news putting regulations in place to hinder the spread of misinformation.
