A recent research report from The Women’s Danger Index revealed that South Africa is the worst country to visit as a solo female traveller out of the top 50 international tourist destinations.
The Women’s Danger Index measures the safety of female travellers who brave the globe alone. The report is compiled based on data gathered from international credible sources, including the World Economic Forum and the 2018 Gallop World Poll.
We ranked the 50 countries with the most international tourists to see which are the worst for women to visit, giving each a danger grade in each category as well as an overall index.”
The methodology behind the report comes down to eight determining factors according to the authors of the Women’s Danger Index, Asher and Lyric Fergusson and South Africa scored the lowest in the categories.
The eight determining factors observed for each of the 50 countries are:
1) Safe to walk alone at night
2) Intentional homicide of women
3) Non-partner sexual violence
4) Intimate partner violence
5) Legal discrimination
6) Global gender gap
7) Gender inequality index
8) Violence against women attitudes
South Africa topped the list with an index of 771.82 and with three of the eight factors as the worst country in regards to ‘women’s safety to walk alone at night‘, ‘intentional homicide of women‘, and ‘non-partner sexual violence‘.
