Snoop Dogg says that he was born again while recording his latest album “Reincarnated” in Jamaica at the start of the year. Along with the rebirth came a name-change… Snoop Dogg is now referring to himself as Snoop Lion.
The ex gangster rapper held a news conference in New York on Monday where he performed a series of reggae inspired tunes, including one called “No Guns Allowed”, which features his daughter.

Apparently he’s being serious about the whole change. Snoop says that he underwent a spiritual and artistic rebirth while in Jamaica where he’s been working on his next album. Rastafarian priests reportedly inspired the name change.
“I went to the temple, where the high priest asked me what my name was, and I said, ‘Snoop Dogg’,” he told journalists on Tuesday. “And he looked me in my eyes and said: ‘No more. You are the light. You are the lion.’ From that moment on, it’s like I had started to understand why I was there.”
Snoop now joins the long list of artists that have changed their names during their careers (think Pdiddy, Prince, Cat Stevens) and has stated that rap is “no longer a challenge”. Snoop says he’ll devote the rest of his career to the irie vibes of reggae, beginning with his appropriately titled next album “Reincarnation”.
“With no disrespect to other rappers, but they can’t fuck with me in rap. … I’ve won every accolade you can get in rap, they call me ‘Uncle Snoop’ in rap. When you’re an uncle, it’s time to find something new. … I want to feel like a kid again.”
I wish him the best of luck and have to say I’m going to miss hearing him spit he’s silky rhymes over sick beats. Guess this video is no longer valid…
