Who is America is a five-part series in which Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali-G, Borat) dupes people, mainly ‘backwards’ American folk and Republican Trump supporters into flaunting their true selves – full of ignorance and easily swayed into doing the most unbelievable, stupid things.
No one walks away from Mr. Cohen feeling or looking good. But one thing is for sure, he is a master at unveiling true colours and testing a person’s will and boundaries. The truth is, none of what he has done is illegal, he operates 100% the power of suggestion, leaving just enough rope for any incurable idiot to hang themselves with.
The latest Episode is an unnerving look into white paranoid America and their skewed perception of Mexicans. Episode 3 also features an interview with Roy Moore, a member of state with a history of sexual abuse. The show also sees cohen pranking the less triggered Ness Lee in a RAP battle as well as an awkward appearance by artists, Bone Crusher.
While Episode 3 is packed with laughs and gasps, I’m backtracking here to Episode 2, to a scene so disturbing and captivating for 2 reasons, 1 – I have never witnessed a group of people so openly ignorant, bigoted and strange looking and 2 Cohen’s use of the South African song “Shosholoza” to ‘defuse’ the situation.
Disguised as Dr Nira Cain-N’Degeocello, Cohen heads to Arizona to present community members with a multi-million dollar “proposal” for a brand new Mosque. The bigotry ensues like you won’t believe until the Doctor (Cohen) tries to calm the situation and starts to sing Shosholoza. Watch Cohen sing in the full episode for FREE right here
