SA Cricket World Cup 2011 Squad Announced

The South African cricket squad for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup has been announced and there have been some interesting ommissions to what still appears to be a side capable of challenging for the elusive World Title. This year the tournament is jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh.  The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Cup starts on the 19th of February 2011 and ends on the 2nd of April with a total of 49 matches being played.

The 15 gifted sportsmen chosen to do the Proteas proud are as follows:

  • Graeme Smith (Captain)
  • Hashim Amla
  • Johan Botha
  • AB de Villiers
  • JP Duminy
  • Faf du Plessis
  • Colin Ingram
  • Jacques Kallis
  • Morne Morkel
  • Wayne Parnell
  • Robbin Peterson
  • Dale Steyn
  • Imran Tahir
  • Lonwabo Tsotsobe
  • Morne van Wyk (wicket keeper).

Overall a fairly well rounded side other than the fact that it is lacking the addition of SA cricket veteran Mark Boucher and someone to bowl at the death like Charl Langeveld. This time the spinners make a strong comeback with Robin Peterson securing a spot in the squad as SA’s third spinner after Johan Botha and Imran Tahir (the uncapped mystical spinner guy who was born in Pakistan and can now play for South Africa).

Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla hold on top their batting positions at the top of the order, with Morné van Wyk being included as a back-up keeper for De Villiers.

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Groups are as follows:

Group A                         Group B

Australia                       West Indies

New Zealand                Bangladesh

Pakistan                         India

Sri Lanka                       England

Zimbabwe                    South Africa

Canada                           Ireland

Kenya                            Netherlands

Lets hope that South Africa finally shake their reputation as sport’s biggest chokers!!

Im a guy with a very particular view of life... im not quite sure what that view is just yet, but when I find out I'll be sure to let you know...

Not that I am the Biggest Smith fan, but the man certainly belong to be there. his ability to take a game away from a team from the beginning can not be underestimated.

Wayne Parnel has not bowled nearly well enough of late to warrant his selection. his death bowling has been scattered, and he seems unable to bowl to the field set, He has not showed enough variation for my liking (which is required on the sub-continent.)

Johan Botha, confuses the hell out of me. the man can allegedly bat, but I have failed to see this with my own eyes.

We are a big hitter short in this squad, men with the power and ability to hit out of the ground. No Albie Morkle??? I know he has not been in the best of form, but he can bowl and bat, and perhaps add’s more in the crucial overs than someone like Ingram (who with the return of Kallis would have to be put down the order)

We lack finishers! in both the batting and bowling department.
I think “Lopsy” will do well there, his bowling has a lot of variation and on those pitches that will be essential.

England are the team to look out for in my opinion. India will have too much pressure on them. 1 billion cricket mad people demanding nothing less than victory on home soil is a sure recipe for disaster. (However under the leadership of Kirsten *Please come coach SA* and MS Doni this team might manage the impossible)

      Either way, cant wait!

      1. You right, but it is annoying how captains rarely get dropped due to under performing. Smith being a case in point.

  1. Not sure what Robbin Peterson is doing there, he’s been a waterboy all season ? Unless they’re gonna continue using him in that capacity ? And what about Albie Morkel(allrounder)?
