Growing cannabis -for private use- has been legal in South Africa for over two years now. While you might find yourself tempted to kick start your own grow, there are a variety of factors you should take into account, since growing cannabis can be costly and requires a certain degree of skill.

For people not blessed with a green thumb, or for those who lead busy lifestyles, there is a new alternative to getting your hands on premium cannabis, like joining a grow-club such as Cape Cannabis Club.

Cape Cannabis Club doesn’t sell weed, instead, the club leases out a private space where they grow and care for a member’s cannabis plant. Trimming, curing and delivering the cannabis is simply part of the service.

Cape Cannabis Club delivers your first membership parcel within 24-48 hours after you sign your lease and then again every single month on the same day. You can read more about how their memberships work, right here.

Once you have signed up and selected your membership tier (how much weed you would like per month), you will be able to choose your monthly strain. Cape Cannabis Club currently offers 12 strains to choose from including Slurricane, Crescendo, Wedding Cake, Apex Kush, 9 Pound Hammer, Blue Dream, Blunicorn, Exodus Cheese, Forbidos, Huckleberry, Blue Cheese and Girl Scout Cookies.

Making an informed decision when choosing your strain can make all the difference to your cannabis experience – even for veteran tokers. The truth is, even those who have been using cannabis for years don’t always know/understand the chemical profiles of the cannabis they are smoking. Using cannabis intelligently (choosing strains to suit certain needs) is the difference between use for the sake of using and using marijuana as a medicinal application – whether that be for headaches, appetite, sleep or to just, laugh!

We recently sampled a couple of strains from Cape Cannabis Club, which all have different chemical and terpene profiles. Over seven days, we tested seven strains, and here is what we found:

1) Exodus Cheese. Type: 50% Indica 50% Sativa. THC: 14%

Exodus Cheese is a hybrid cannabis variety often referred to as just Cheese or UK Cheese. It is believed to have grown out of Skunk #1 seeds and is originally only available as a clone.

Look and Smell: The sample we received was dewy and dense with a distinct funky pungent smell, slightly sour even.
Flavour: Creamy with sour, skunky undertones. The first thing that comes to mind is cheesy quiche.
Effect: A mellow and chilled effect with mood-enhancing properties. I felt stoned but with enough energy to stay productive, motivated, and focused, making this strain perfect for daytime use and even your weekend wake and bake.

2) Apex Kush. Type: 90% Indica. THC: 16%

Cape Cannabis Club’s Apex Kush is cultivated by Ethos Genetics. Ethos Apex is a cross between their Mandarin Cookies and Lilac Diesel Bx3.

Look and Smell: Chunky minty green popcorn-shaped bud with thick, vibrant orange hairs and a subtle spicy and earthy aroma.
Flavour: Subtle fruity flavour with light fuel undertones.
Effect: This high-THC strain was one of the most mood-enhancing of the lot. A pleasant buzz with warm and fuzzy temporal sensations at first, then it hits you between the eyes, progressing into a goofy, heavy-headed couch-lock. Also experienced quite a bit of dry mouth with this strain. A lovely evening or weekend strain.

3) Wedding Cake. Type: 60% Indica 40% Sativa. THC: 21%

One of the most popular strains in the wolrd (and medical community) Wedding Cake (aka Pink Cookies in some circles) is an indica-dominant hybrid. While some believe Wedding Cake is a cross between Animal Mints and Triangle Kush, the consensus is that WC is a hybrid of Cherry Pie and Girl Scout Cookies (GSC).

Look and Smell: Dense nug and in true WC style, the bud was teardrop-shaped. Sweet, cookie-dough-like aroma with a musty twist.
Flavour: Rich and bold flavour. Sweet and minty at first with sour, musty notes after a few seconds.
Effect: Immediate effect with a pleasant sensation in the face and head, develops quite quickly into a body-melting high. This strain is best-enjoyed immobile. I would not recommend it during the day or if you have anything important to do. A wonderfully sedating strain. A good strain for nighttime and medicinal use.

4) Slurricane. Type: 60% Indica 40% Sativa. THC: 26%

Bred by In House Genetics, the popular Slurricane is a cross between Do-Si-Dos and Purple Punch. For the indica lover who enjoys a bold flavour and potent effects, look no further.

Look and Smell: Dense, frosty dark green nug with beautiful purple undertones and thin amber hairs with spicy, earthy tones and a hint of fruitiness.
Flavour: Sweet, fruity with subtle fuel flavour.
Effect: Immediate effect and immediately heavy. Mood enhancing but also couch-locking with a spaced-out-effect. Progresses into a potent body high and possibly the need to sleep. Perfect for bedtime and for those struggling to sleep. Slurricane is definitely for nighttime and medicinal use.

5) Blue Dream. Type: 40% Indica 60% Sativa. THC: 19%

Blue Dream is a Sativa-dominant hybrid originating from California. This strain is cross between Blueberry and Haze.

Look and Smell: Dense bud in shades of yellow and orange, not too frosty with a sweet and fruity aroma with a hint of sour citrus.
Flavour: Much like the smell, its taste is sweet with a sour kick.
Effect: A light yet effective strain. A bit rushy at first but flows into a blissful blend of body relaxation and cerebral stimulation. Increased sense of energy and motivation. Excellent daytime toke and mood enhancer.

6) Girl Scout Cookies. Type: 60% Indica 40% Sativa. THC: 19%

GSC, aka Girl Scout Cookies, is an OG Kush and Durban Poison hybrid that has won numerous Cannabis Cup awards.

Look and Smell: Distinctive and bright green calyxes with deep purple tones and neon orange hairs and a sweet and mint-like aroma.
Flavour: Sweet and earth, quite subtle.
Effect: This toke delivered the best of both a Sativa and Indica – a real mind-trip coupled with intense body relaxation and increased appetite. Fantastic nighttime and medicinal strain.

7) Crescendo. 70% Indica 30% Sativa. THC: 30%

Crescendo is a cross between the infamous I-95 X Chemdawg X Mandarin Cookies.

Look and Smell: Large spade-shaped frosty bud, mostly green with purple accents and a sweet woody aroma with a gassy undertone.
Flavour: Sweet, earthy profile with a sour and fuel-like-flavour.
Effect: This one is a creeper. The high gets progressively more intense. In all honesty, I experienced slight anxiousness with this strain. It was quite strong and long-lasting.

Final Thoughts

Cape Cannabis Club service is phenomenal and prospective members can expect to receive their first parcel within 24-48hours anywhere in the country. They offer their members an impressive and diverse list of strains that can either be grown indoor or greenhouse. I have always preferred indoor cannabis and would opt to have my plant grown that way.

Their final product comes discreetly packaged and on time. Member plants are expertly grown, well-manicured, and I thoroughly enjoyed trying their strains with Wedding Cake, Slurricane, Apex Kush and Blue Dream being my top choices.

For those interested in trying out their service, Cape Cannabis Club is currently running a trial membership where prospective members can browse and borrow a small share of 1 cannabis plant (1 gram) – all you’ll have to do is pay the courier fee.
