Rent the Musical is now in its 20th year and will be returning to South Africa in February led by a completely new cast and produced by the Stephan Fourie Theatre Company. The much acclaimed musical will be kicking off with a run in Cape Town at The Artscape in February followed by a few weeks up in Jozi at the Joburg Theatre.
“RENT is a beautiful platform which younger audiences can identify themselves with, that voices their concerns and raises their voice. Besides themes about love, dignity, anger and pain the musical deals with darker issues which the youth faces – AIDS, drug addiction, suicide and death. These are factors which are still prevalent in South Africa today which is why this musical is so relevant.
It has the power to heal and change hearts.
One key aspect that this entire process has made me realize about love is that it is a temporary high and cannot be bought or forced, hence the title. We all will eventually pass on to the next life and one shouldn’t fear the journey but rather embrace it, as the song says “No day but today”. “
