We’ve always been fans of the international party brand, Ultra Music Festival and when it launched here in South Africa six years ago, we knew our electronic dreams had been answered. If you know the name Ultra, you know that it’s synonymous with the biggest names in electronic music, the most gorgeous onstage dancers and major productions that take place across the world – from its home base in Miami to South Africa and all over Europe.
Over five years and across ten festivals, Cape Town and Johannesburg have enjoyed the most sought after international and local dance acts on the Ultra SA main stage while the Resistance stage has taken on a life of its own bringing a more underground sound to the proverbial table, featuring artists at the top of their game and providing a platform for our local stars to perform alongside the biggest names in the world.
This year is no different, Ultra South Africa’s sixth annual production, in both Jozi and CT, will feature; The Chainsmokers, Above & Beyond, Infected Mushroom, Martin Garrix, Vini Vici and an astronomical local line up which you can view in full here.
Today, we’re taking a trip down memory lane as we get ready for Ultra South Africa next month. We pay our respect in this article to a festival brand that has brought us the likes of Martin Garrix, Dash Berlin, Skrillex, Hardwell, Axwell & Ingrosso, Armin Van Buuren, Zedd, Afrojack, Alesso, Nicky Romero, Tiesto, Dubfire, Claude VonStroke, Eats Everything, Carnage, David Guetta, W&W, Krewella, Gorgon City, Oliver Heldens and DJ Snake just to name a few.
Take a look back at Ultra South Africa over the past 5 years below, from; lineups to posters, promo videos, Ultra Angels and more. For more information join the event pages and get your tickets online today.

Ultra SA 2018:
Last year, at the 5th anniversary, we were treated to three stages in Cape Town and four stages in Jozi, both festivals with stacked lineups. The Resistance Stage was headlined by Dubfire & Eats Everything which was billed to be the biggest Resistance show to date. Being the global festivals 5th anniversary, you knew they were going to go all out on their production and that’s just what the crowd was treated too.
Notable mentions – Hardwell & Armin’s cross-over and Dubfire’s relentless Techno set.

Ultra SA 2017:
Ah, 2017 was the year our good friends STAB Virus got their Ultra debut on the Resistance Stage CT, held inside the underground of the Cape Town Stadium, giving it a good basement feel to it, which was then later closed by Nic Fanciulli. We also had the pleasure of watching Pascal and Pearce open up the main show in Jozi.
Notable Mentions: STAB Virus playing on the Resistance Stage. Watching Nic Fanciulli close the Resistance Stage. Martin Garrix’s closing set on the main stage.
Ultra SA 2016:
We were never ready for Ultra 2016…
This was one of the biggest shows in South Africa and I’m sure many can agree with that. The Resistance Stage kept MyCityByNight busy with the likes of Seth Troxler, Black Coffee and the Martinez Brothers who dominated the arena. I won’t lie but we found ourselves bouncing between both floors – we couldn’t miss the show Skrillex delivered us. Think about the biggest production you may have witnessed in South Africa, well take that and times it by 3 – this show delivered and left everyone in the crowd cheering for more.
A notable mention of 2016 was Mr Carmacks main floor show in Cape Town around midday – this is something we’ll never forget. Skrillex, need we say anymore?
Ultra SA 2015:
After the successful launch of Ultra South Africa, we were treated to another year of HUGE international acts but our main focus was the announcement of local heroes Pascal & Pearce who would be playing the main stage where international superstars Axwell & Ingrosso were set to end the show. A major reason we love Ultra is because of the massive names they consistently put on stage – you’ll easily get to hear a sunset set from Dash Berlin or Armin Van Buuren which we were lucky enough to witness in 2015 with Armin pumping the Cape Town crowd with some high energy uplifting trance with a fitting sunset in the background
Notable mentions from 2015 – Pascal and Pearce dominating the main stage & Axwell & Ingrosso’s emotional closing set and Samsung’s insane set up at the festival.
Ultra SA 2014:
If you were a raver in 2013 and were around for the news that Ultra Music Festival was launching in South Africa, you’d have been just as ecstatic as we were. It was the biggest news to hit our dance music community at the time. The brand launched Ultra South Africa and dropped a mega line up of eight internationals acts spread across two cities.
Ultra South Africa had arrived and the show, the production, the artists, the pyrotechnics, the fireworks confirmed that South Africa was indeed a huge party destination and that we were at the forefront of something special.
