Yesterday was the Fifa imposed deadline for national coaches of nations involved in this year’s World Cup tournament to announce their provisional 30 man squads. Considering that these squads still need to be wittled down to a final very lucky and gifted 23 footballers, there were already some big names left out- to my dismay!
One such name has to be that of the midfield magician with the ball and Brazilian superstar- Ronaldinho. This made me pretty bleak as I think myself along with a whole bunch of other people here in South Africa and abroad were really looking forward to see him beat a hapless defender with the Rabona (good trick, unfortunate name). Brazil coach Dunga had this to say “Ronaldinho’s quality and capacity as a player is indisputable. But my decision has to be made based on reason. I have to make a decision based on what happens on the field,” DEEP. Also left out of the Brazil squad was the gifted teenage striking sensation Alexander Pato, who currently plies his trade at AC Milan.
Other notable omissions were: Italian trio Francesco Totti, Luca Toni and Alessandro Del Piero (now this I cant understand! Totti IS Italy), Karim Benzema (underage prostitute issues as well), Samir Nasri and Patrick Viera of France and Ruud van Nistelrooy (ex Manchester United striking legend) from Netherlands.
As for all of those names who still might bring a little excitement there are the likes of: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Xavi (Spain), Cesc Fabregas (Spain) David Villa (Spain), Fernando Torres (Spain), Iniesta (Spain), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Carlos Teves (Argentina), Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina), Theo Walcott (England), Wayne Rooney (England), John Terry (England) and even Jaimie Carragher -who came out of International retirement to provide back up to the injury prone Ledley King and Rio Ferdinand i in defence.
Then of course there’s the African Stars- mainly Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba, whose 29 goals helped Chelsea win the Premier League (it pains me to write that) and our very own Matthew Booth and team captain Teko Modise!!
There are 28 days to go until the start of the World Cup and I cant wait to be treated to a spectacle of footballing entertainment right here in our back yard!!!
