PLAYTOPIA and MAKE GAMES AFRICA (MGA) have joined forces to create one ecstatic 3-day event where Gamers, developers and event-goers can revel in local and international indie games, eye-melting interactive and digital art and a killer music line up! Delegate and festival ticket holders can look forward to exhibitions by some of South Africa’s top interactive artists, 30+ alternative games, a Super Friendship Arcade room with games played on custom controllers as well as VR rooms.
Each week leading up to Playtopia MGA 2019 we’ll introduce and acquaint you with some of the phenomenally talented speakers, artists and musicians who will make up this year’s festival. Last week we took a closer look at Brooklyn based programmer, artist and game developer Nicole He (USA), the South African collaboration behind the award-winning ‘Lost Botanist’ experience, Tulips and Chimneys and Eden Labs as well as dj duo Holy Funk. This week we’ll introduce you to the funkadelic beat spinner, Tommy Gun from South Africa, Guitar Wizards, which will be featured at the ALT.CTRL.GDC exhibition, as well as internationally renowned South African motion artist, creative director and designer, Inka Kendzia.
The mural, thematically based on Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace, highlights the importance of actively working towards a society that functions on open communication and inclusion.
The intricate projection is carefully constructed to interact within the artwork, layering a narrative alluding to borders, immigration, freedom of movement, peaceful protest, government oppression and the strength of the human spirit in overcoming these challenges.
The symbolic use of the flag accentuates the power of non-violent protest and negotiation in the pursuit of peace. The project invites the viewer to connect with their humanity and to see themselves as a part of the whole; to feel an interconnectedness between humans and nature, and the fluidity of geographic understandings of place and home.
Guitar Wizards return to the ALT.CTRL.GDC exhibition at Playtopia MGA this December! Guitar Wizards is a versus rhythm game played across 2240 LEDs with no computer or screen in sight. Watch their awesome submission video below for more info.

Best known for his uplifting melodies and swanky grooves, Tommy Gun has always leaned towards the lighter side of dance music as a DJ. Schooled in the classics yet with a modern sensibility, Gun strikes a rare balance between feeding the proverbial beast on the dancefloor and presenting it with something new.
He honed his craft over ten years as resident DJ and promoter of the pioneering ‘Untamed Youth’ club night in Cape Town. With left field institution Fiction as its home base, Untamed Youth introduced local crowds to a new wave of indie/electronic and disco sounds and proved to be a strong platform for up-and-coming DJ’s and performers alike.
Inspired to reach out to diverse audiences, Gun has played at major clubs and festivals across South Africa as well as internationally in Mauritius, London and Copenhagen. He has also featured alongside respected international artists such as Classixx, Marcus Marr, Para One, The 2 Bears and Jacques Renault.
