This rather relaxed chap almost got crushed by a plane while he was soaking up some rays on a beach in Heligoland, an island in Northern Germany. Pilot Juergen Drucker, 52, came within inches of squishing the poor guy as he tried to land his Piper PA-28-181 Archer II at the coastal runway.
As you can see in the video the pilot hit a fence and then eventually managed to land his plane on the actual runway, meters away from the beach sand. There are quite a few things that bother me about the happenings in this video – the first being the absolutely ridiculous location of the runway in relation to the beach and second, the pilot’s statement after nearly landing his plane on top of a holiday maker –
‘In my defence I can say that I didn’t see him because he was lying down and I’m just very grateful it worked out well and I didn’t land on him. I don’t want to say any more than that. I fear I will be in for a fine from the Federal Aviation Office but I hope I will be able to keep my licence.’
Someone please take this guy’s licence away. Please.
