A rare photo has surfaced of a fateful meeting between billionaire space cowboys Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. The photo, which was taken 17 years in 2004, was shared by Trung Phan, a writer for the business newsletter The Hustle. According to Phan, the photo was snapped just as both Musk’s and Bezos’ space ambitions were starting to heat up.
“In 2004, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos met for a meal to discuss space.
It was one of their few in-person interactions. The conversation they had perfectly captures the different approaches they’ve taken to space exploration,” Phan tweeted.
The 2004 meeting captured in the viral photo is widely believed to be the beginning of a long-standing rivalry between Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos and their competing rocket companies, SpaceX and Blue Origin.
Musk once described their meeting in the book, “The Space Barons,” saying that Bezos was “barking up the wrong tree” about space travel and that SpaceX had already tried several of the ideas Bezos was proposing. “I actually did my best to give good advice, which he largely ignored,” Musk said.

For the past year, the two moguls have also been neck-in-neck for the title of the richest person in the world, with Bezos is currently in the lead. While Bezo’s has yet to reply, Musk responded to the photo, tweeting: “Wow, hard to believe that was 17 years ago!”
