Midnight Circus Festival turning CPT’s festival world on its head

Just over a month ago, Forgotten Culture – a Cape Town based event label – announced their collaboration with the South African National Circus in order to bring a completely new concept to the shores of our hometown: A music festival which will be supplemented by a circus. On the 22nd of April 2016, magic will be made as these two combine their forces of music and performance art to present a production like you’ve never seen before. You can expect over head trapeze, fire playing and many more intriguing and daring acts to be alongside and supporting a world class local and international musical line up including  Miyagi (Hamburg, GER) and Seth Schwarz live(Berlin, GER). The festival will take place at the home of the SAN circus in Observatory under the roof of their big top circus tent – an inner city venue that is a mere 5 min from the CBD.

The event is first and foremost a music festival. Forgotten Culture, since starting up in 2016, has built up a reputation for throwing events that are mainly focused on the music. Each event does this through intimate stage design and minimal lighting to direct the audience attention to the sound waves bouncing around the room. Occupying venues across Cape Town including Colorbox Studios, Club 89 and The Sation On Bree, Forgotten Culture is ready to move onto their next challenge, the Midnight Circus. Again music occupies the heart of the celebration, and for the first time Forgotten Culture has opted to hand pick two international artists to headline their event: Miyagi, an highly renowned artist from Hamburg, Germany, that has had releases on huge labels including SOSO, Einmusika Recordings and Katurmukke. And also from Germany, Seth Schwarz, an extremely respected live performer with releases on massive labels including All Day I Dream and 3000GRAD.

This time, through stage design, Forgotten Culture aim not only to enhance the music but also to incorporate the circus element into their event. The circus acts on display are a selection of the following: Trapeze, Cradle Trapeze, Rope Ariel Acrobatics, Cloud Swing, Limbo Fire Acts, Contortionists, High Diving, Ground Acrobatics, Human Pyramids, Mini Trampoline, Rola Balancing, Pole Act, High Wire, Aerial Silks, Duo Strength Adagio, Hula hoops, Skipping Acts, Small to Medium Stunts and Themed Entertainment. These acts will be integrated throughout the venue in various ways to maximise their effect. Through stage design and choreography expect: fire, swinging, juggling, jumping, trickery, diving and more – Whether it be on circus platforms alongside the DJ, outside when you’re chilling or just above your head on the dance floor, these acts are there to add an element to the night like you’ve never seen before.

On the 22nd of April, surrounding the big top circus tent will be a carnival like village consisting of fortune tellers, food vendors, intimate performances, coffee and more… So be sure to come on down and experience a production like Cape Town has never seen before.

Rumoured to have the blue-prints for Krang's TechnoDrome, stolen straight from Dimension X, he’s the type of guy who exudes so much coolness that he adds whole countries on Facebook at one time instead of just people. Always up for a party and a Tequila shot or two this is the guy who we always call first, both before and after a night out…
