Last night while all the mooiness in South Africa were watching the premiere of the new season of Grey’s Anatomy all the boys were tuning in to the Ballon d’Or award to see whether it would be Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi who won… It was- Messi is now officially the world’s best football player of 2010.
Messi won the trophy for a second straight year, finishing ahead of the likes of Barcelona teammates and Spanish midfield maestros Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.
“It’s a very special day for me, and I did not expect to win” Messi said through a translator on receiving the award at a gala ceremony in FIFA’s home city. Messi obtained 22.65 percent of the votes cast by a combination of coaches and captains of national teams, plus invited journalists (they forgot us… tisk). The original shortlist featured 23 players.
Andres Iniesta finished second with 17.36 percent and Xavi received 16.48 percent to finish third for the second straight year, while the Special one – Jose Mourinho won the men’s coach award for leading Inter Milan to a treble including the Champions League.
And as if that wasnt cool enough it was also announced that a football team made up solely of African footballers will take on current Soccer World Cup champions Spain in a match in SA later this year. Although no date or venue has as yet been confirmed, the fixture is a definate according to Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, who made the announcement on Monday as billed it as a way of saying thank you to all of us responsible for the making the South African World Cup so successful.
