As the country has been gradually reopening to business, schools and parts of leisure, we’ve seen the inevitable rise in COVID-19 cases. While staying indoors and washing your hands is the golden standard (Can we change this to ‘Gold Standard’) to avoid being infected, an extended period of lockdown is just not sustainable -for anyone- in the long run.
If you’re back at work, you should be imposing stringent personal hygiene protocols, like washing your hands regularly and sanitizing your workspace and essentials – like your phone and keyboard- often. And of course, maintain social distancing standards, avoid touching your face and wear a fabric facemask and/or visor.

Additionally, your employer will also have to ensure that they implement strict measures around your workspace. According to the South African Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, all businesses that are reopening must put measures in place before restarting work.
According to Nxesi, the following responsibilities lie with all business owners and any employer who does not comply with the directions may be ordered to close business. Failure to adhere to the necessary measures to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 may result in criminal prosecution.
Employers must take measures to protect the health and safety of everyone in their workplace, including contractors, self-employed people and volunteers.
Adopt Social Distancing
Employers must arrange workplaces to ensure a minimum of 1.5m between workers. If this is not practical, employers must install physical barriers and workers supplied with personal protective equipment (PPE) free of charge.
Employers must screen workers for symptoms of Covid-19 when they report for work, namely for fever, cough, sore throat, redness of eyes, shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing, body aches, loss of smell or taste.
Employers must provide sufficient quantities of hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol, and disinfect surfaces, equipment and common areas regularly.
