Due for release on August 14 2020, South African producer, composer & multi-instrumentalist TZARA’s latest offering “The Slumber With The Key” is an experimental, dreamlike EP inspired by hypnagogia – the hallucinatory state between waking life and sleep.
“I’ve had a rather complex relationship with the facets of my mental health – perhaps the most interesting, inspiring, consuming and confusing of them all being my curious perception of reality.
Since I was a kid, I’ve experienced strange illusionary phenomena, including hypnagogic hallucinations (often auditory and orchestral in nature) hypnopompic hallucinations (sleep paralysis), as well as an extraordinarily vivid dream life.
These blurred boundaries between the “real” and the imaginary have been a source of profound inspiration, constant entertainment, frequent dissociation, and occasional terror.
My upcoming mini-album is about my relationship with dreaming – both in the literal and metaphorical sense. Many of the melodies and arrangements have their origin in hallucinations.
It’s not my magnum opus, but it’s served its purpose as an exploration of my funny brain” – Tzara
The title comes from Salvador Dali’s description of inducing hypnagogia – to find inspiration, he would “slumber with a key”, The noise of the key falling would wake him before his surreal ideas slipped over the ridge of consciousness.
“The Slumber With The Key” was written, recorded & produced in TZARA’s bedroom studio, with most instruments played by TZARA herself. It features guitar by Aviwe Sikele and clarinet by Maya Boraine.
