Internationally acclaimed DJ and producer Black Coffee‘s debut film ‘Matwetwe’ was released two weeks ago to national acclaim.
Matwetwe stars newcomers Tebatso Mashishi, Sibusiso Khwinana and is directed by Kagiso Lediga with Black Coffee as the film’s executive producer. After high public demand in its first week of release, the number of cinemas Matwetwe was being screened at doubled in its second week with the film raking in over 2 million at the box office.
The film is a coming-of-age adventure following Lefa and Papi, best friends and recent high school graduates, on the biggest hustle of their young lives. Over the course of one action-packed New Year’s Eve in the iconic township of Atteridgeville, the boys try to pull off a huge deal, dodge a kingpin gangster and his violent gang members, get the girl and, ultimately, save their own lives in this hilarious but sometimes very serious escapade.
The film has been doing really well. We reached around R900,000 in three days and it has just gotten stronger from there. We are now over R2-million. It reached it in eight days and we are happy because it took eight days to make.”
