JIVA! All you need to know about the highly anticipated South African Netflix series

This week Thursday (24 June) Netflix will air the first episode of its highly anticipated new original series JIVA! which stars Noxolo Dlamini as the lead.

According to the synopsis, JIVA! tells the story of a talented but frustrated street dancer from Umlazi, Durban who struggles with juggling the demands of a dead-end job, family responsibilities and a rocky love life when she discovers a dance competition with a cash prize that could be the ticket out of her working-class neighbourhood in Durban.

JIVA! is a local production, from script to screen and will showcase an all-African cast and crew including break out star Noxolo Dlamini (Sarafina Stage Production, Isibaya), Candice Modiselle, Sne Mbatha, Stella Dlangalala, Zazi Kunene, Anga ‘NaakMusiQ’ Makubalo, Given Stuurman, Ntuthuzelo Grootboom, Zamani Mbatha, Tony Kgoroge, and more.

Award-winning writer, director and producer Busisiwe Ntintili, of The Ntintili Factory, is the brains behind the project. The creator and showrunner joined forces with Scottnes L. Smith and award-winning Directors Mandla Dube and Mmambatho Montsho to bring JIVA! to life.

Dancer, actor and radio personality Bontle Modiselle alongside Tom London (founder of Soweto’s Finest) are the creative team behind the choreography for the series, which features a wide range of styles unique to South African dance culture.

JIVA! was produced by Cape Town-based production team Blue Ice Africa with Busisiwe Ntintili, Adam Friedlander and Tebogo Maila as Executive Producers and features incredible work by acclaimed South African film colourist Kyle Stroebel (My Octopus Teacher).
