In 2005 police began investigating Epstein after a parent reported that Epstein had sexually abused her 14-year-old daughter. He pleaded guilty and was convicted in 2008 of procuring an underage girl for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute. He was only convicted of only these two crimes as part of a plea deal but federal officials had in fact identified 36 girls, some as young as 14 years old, who were allegedly abused by Jeffrey Epstein.
