Interview | Get to know what goes on behind the scenes with Kinky Summer’s core team

Brought to you by We Love Summer and Kinky Disco, Kinky Summer – South Africa’s biggest themed New Year’s Eve festival – returns this December, bigger and better than before! This year’s theme is one of intergalactic extravagance that’ll have attendees partying amongst the planets. In collaboration with Feastival, We House Sundays and Vacation Club, Kinky Summer will take place at the plush La Paris Wine Estate in Franschhoek (for the fifth year) featuring FIVE interactive stages and a sweltering lineup of local and international artists.

MCBN: With Kinky Summer holding its spot as one of the best NYE events in South Africa, we’re inquisitive to know how this plan first came about? Kinky Summer is now the flagship NYE event, allowing thousands and thousands of NYE revellers to party safely at an exquisite outdoor venue with the perfect backdrop to bring in 2020.

The plan was hatched by Kinky Disco & We Love Summer as two of the earliest daytime house music based event brands in Cape Town. At the time, the outdoor festival culture was a majority psytrance based. Between our two brands, we had started to forge a new party culture of outdoor day parties. The next logical step was for us to combine our creative energy and collaborate on building a NYE celebration for attendees who preferred house & techno music.

Our first year was a great success, and I guess as they say, the rest is history.

MCBN: Kinky Summer = Kiny Disco and We Love Summer and friends. Who else has joined the family since the event first took place?

We greatly believe in collaboration. The power of brands working together makes for an incredible experience for the attendees – and that’s really what it’s all about.

For example, we have previously collaborated with Sexy Groovy Love with their take over at the picturesque La Paris dam stage.

Last year, for the first time, we welcomed We House Sundays to the festival with their own dance floor and it was incredible! Their dancefloor was housed in our now well known “dome”, and it was jam packed all night long with their loyal WHS crew dancing to Cassiem & Leighton’s incredible extended sets. This year, you can expect them again!

In addition, for the first time this year, our partnership with Cape Town’s inner city street food festival, “Feastival” is going to be special. They will be hosting a version of their acclaimed street food feast and live music stage at Kinky Summer this year with local heroes Matthew Mole & Grassy Spark headlining the stage.

MCBN: You have invited a large number of internationals to play at Kinky Summer since the festival’s inception. You’ve booked Robosonic as the headline artist for this year with a few international artists joining him. How does the booking process work for New Years event, does the music and headliner have as much impact on the event, experience and other elements to Kinky Summer?

New Year’s Eve is always a tough one when it comes to bookings as agents try to up artists’ fees to exorbitant levels, and availability is slim due to the number of events hosted over the period. With that said, we always do our best to book an incredible international & local lineup that will help our revellers see in the new year to the best soundtrack possible. To date, we hosted some big names in the international house & techno circuit and we’re not planning on stopping anytime soon!

MCBN: Talk to us about this 6 am closing time. This is what we call partying until the sunrise, wouldn’t you agree? We haven’t seen a festival or event close at 6 am in years, how will this work; will there be a bar open until 6 am for party-goers and is there any special planned for the sunrise session?

It’s NYE, who wants to go home at 12 or 2 AM?

Our sunrise session at Kinky Summer has become somewhat famous and a favourite amongst attendees. We focus hard on making it as memorable as possible by picking the right artists to play the sunrise slot, only having one stage open so that everyone comes together for sunrise, and by keeping certain pyrotechnics for the end of the show.

Our revellers find themselves in the most incredible setting – on a lush grass dancefloor hugged by mountains for as far as the eye can see as the sun rises for the time that year… All while in the company of their best friends and with an incredible soundtrack to match. There literally isn’t a better recipe for a brilliant start to your first day of 2020.

MCBN: Outer Space is your Kinky Summer theme for 2019/2020’s event. What can we expect once we’re inside the doors at KS: Outer Space, without giving away too many secrets and surprises?

As any attendees will know, we don’t take themes lightly.

MCBN: You’re introducing a new stage this year in partnership with Feastival. Let us in on what’s going down and who’s headlining this stage!?

Since our inception, we’ve been a strictly electronic music celebration, but after years of attendees asking for a live music offering as well as the rise of Feastival’s success in the inner-city live music space, we decided to try a boutique live music stage with them this NYE. The stage will be headlined by Matthew Mole & Grassy Spark, two of South Africa’s heavyweights, and we couldn’t be more excited to see how it goes down.

MCBN: For anyone who’s never been to Kinky Summer, how would you explain it to them in one sentence below?

An 18 hour themed New Year’s Eve celebration set in the most beautiful outdoor setting with the sun, swimming and incredible music all day through to the first sunrise of 2020.

Oh, and don’t forget the 4 stages, over 40 incredible artists and performers and some surprises we can’t let out of the bag just yet.

That’s a little more than a sentence haha.

MCBN: Who are three LOCAL artists you’re excited to see at this year’s NYE event:

A huge amount of work goes into our lineup each year and we try to book a good representation of the local scene. We often notice that South Africa’s local talent is hugely underestimated. In short, it’s impossible to choose… I guess we’re excited to see everyone play for different reasons, and we know they will bring their best to the booth this NYE.

You’ll love this event if you love: Large festivals, themed parties, FOOD, parties with swimming facilities.
