THE SPOKEN WORD

A fresh face among the masses but already a fan-favorite, Talia Zaken is here to stay! A palate which is essential to any floor at the moment, she finds herself gaining traction in one of the most unorthodox times. This alone speaks volumes to the journey and dedication Talia but we can confidently say is only the beginning. With an addictive personality to match her character, we are looking forward to see which way she goes next. In the mean time, we get into her story a bit more.

THE SCOOP

1) Describe yourself in 3 words?

Talia: Passionate Adventurous Creative

2) Talk to us about your journey: How did you end up in the music industry? What steps did you take to get there?

Talia: For as long as I can remember music has been a part of my life. My dad has always been passionate about music, we grew up listening to bands like Pink Floyd and The Scorpions, but then he also played banging trance at a 140bpm – diversity at its finest. Some of my earliest memories are of my dad playing music for us and dancing around in the lounge. Music has always been my passion, and once I started going out and listening to DJ’s play, I felt myself being drawn into the idea of holding space for a crowd the way my dad held space for me and my sisters. The synergy between the DJ and crowd is one of the most special connections, and I wanted to be a part of it, and to it experience both sides of the DJ booth. Nothing gives me greater joy than hearing an incredibly produced song for the first time, and being able to share that feeling with crowds of people is indescribable.  Being able to connect with people through music is my greatest gift, and DJ’ing is the most special way of doing so. I started Dj’ing in 2019, playing at small parties and for friends. Once the lockdown hit, I decided to take the time off to really engage with my skills and take my knowledge to another level. I put hours of work and practice into my technique. The more I played and practiced, the better I got. I had some help along the way from other incredible DJ’s who helped me take my skill set to another level. Once the Covid regulations changed, I started playing at small events and luckily the right people heard me play. I then got presented with more and more opportunities which helped me grow immensely.

3) What message do you feel you are most passionate about bringing to the forefront as an artist?

Talia: Music has the ability to create a community – an unspoken bond between people who are feeling the same elation as you. It has the ability to connect people. Music is the only language that everyone understands, no matter who you are or where you come from. Music is indiscriminate. Being able to connect with a crowd, and to connect people on a dance floor is more than I could ever ask for. Human beings thrive on social interactions, forming relationships and bonds, we need each other when times are tough, and to be ale to find that connection through music, or from being on a dance floor is something special. Especially in times like today when humans seem so disconnected and torn from each other, hopefully music will be a tool to unify us again. At the end of the day, I believe our purpose on earth is to form strong relationships with each other, and music has the ability to facilitate that.

4) Who would you say is your biggest inspiration (in any capacity)?

Talia: I am inspired by the people in my life. My friends and family are my greatest inspiration.Seeing the people I love, doing what they love inspires me the most.

5) The best piece of advice you can give to those who want to be inspired and are just so new to the industry?

Talia: Don’t play someone else’s game, create your own. Don’t compare your self to others, or feel the need to adapt or change your style, but rather listen to your intuition, trust yourself and stay true to what you love. Take every opportunity you get to play and put yourself out there, because you never know who’s listening, and you never know who will connect with you through the music you play.
