The Spoken Word

Organically unearthed and unique in every aspect of her being, Samantha has formed a cult status on outdoor floors with her versatility and technique. Someone who tends to rise to any occasion, Scamantrix is just one of many artists in SA who delve into a hybrid palate to bring across journeys of true story-telling. With things on the Scamantrix front truly and wholesomely in its groove, Samantha brings us something fresh with her newer alias Toni L8lee which she has gifted an exclusive for us as well… and who knows? we might get a little Scamantrix exclusive in the pipeline as well.

The Scoop

1) Describe Yourself In Three Words

Samantha: Passionate, Vivacious, Melophile.

2) Your Fave Release Of All Time

Samantha: Sho… so many! First influences would have to be: Antix – Album called LULL – Released in 2003 on iBoga records. (So ahead of their time!), First Stone 2006 Album released on Vagalume Records produced by Juarez Achkar Petrillo (Swarup), Ricardo Souza e Silva (Zumbi) & Gustavo Manfroni Amaral de Souza (Burn in Noise) (It’s that Brazilian growling sound I love!)

3) Artist To Watch Out For?

Samantha: Locally – Abra, Psydewise, Tersius & Killawatt (Been around for a while) – all playing under their new Our Minds record label – yummy psychedelic tunage!

Samantha: Internationally – Oksha, Axial Tilt & Fungus Funk. Then in a newish genre – psytech/psygressive – Artech & Zentrix. Both these artist are releasing awesome new sounds on the label called Anarkicks records – which is blending the psychedelic sounds with fat techno baselines. I love using this on my other DJ act – called Toni L8lee – more techno/deep tech/slower sounds.

4) Advice For The Dreamers, Trendsetters & Up N’ Comers Out There?

Samantha: BE AUTHENTIC! There is only ONE of you – so use it to your advantage – Find your signature sound, get creative with what you put other there. I always look at what other people I admire are doing & then think of the best way to do it completely different. Leave your ego at the door it gets you nowhere! Ask your WHY? Why are you doing this & is it for the right reasons! Make sure you’re having FUN & connecting with people. Don’t be afraid to collaborate, network, learn & teach. Support each other & stick to positive criticism – we have enough negativity in the world! I am super shy, but the more I am open to being REAL the more awesome people I meet & network with in the industry. Balance is vital – you must look after your vessel (Body). Sleep, eat & exercise is vital – you cannot express/channel music if you are depleted.

5) What do you have going on currently? What can we look forward to?

Samantha: I’ve had such an awesome summer season so far! Playing at festivals such as Origin, Flying Circus – Alien Safari, SummerCamp, Vortex OS & UltraNoize plus a few club gigs. Next gigs coming up – SummerCamp, Vortex Phoenix, Vortex Open Source. I have been invited to be one of the guest speakers on the DJ panel for the lab session 4.1 – master class edition – held at the SAE music institute in Woodstock, Cape Town. Then to wrap up winter – I am running away to Portugal for a summer treat! – I will be attending the 20year celebration BOOM FESTIVAL (Just as a spectator) – I highly recommend fellow artists to check out whats happening internationally. I try go annually to a festival abroad – its totally worth it – promise!
