Name: Mark Stevens
The Spoken Word
Bass & Drums from a locality setting from a person who holds the torch towards to horizon on a genre grown by the drive of the artist of his time. Niskerone is recognized as one of the head-pieces of the DnB movement in SA and has cultivated the scene in an almost “founding father” manner to continuously breathe life into the niche like nobody else does. Time and time again we have seen the rise and fall of genres and music in general with society tending to lean towards a universally palatable sound at times but from the shadows we see the rise of DnB on the regular and one of the main faces behind that in SA is NISKERONE.
1) Describe Yourself In Three Words
Mark: Passionate. Motivated. Transparent.
2) Fave Release of All Time?
Mark: It’s impossible to answer this one, but one of my all time favorite records is DJ Fresh (UK) – Twister
3) Artist To Watch Out For?
Mark: Locally, Chee and Jon Casey are making mad waves. Worldwide: 1991, Crimes! and Great Dane (although he’s been around for while).
4) Advice For The Dreamers, Trendsetters & Up N’ Comers Out There?
Mark: Stay humble and true to your core beliefs, be prepared to put the hours in and find a muse/source of inspiration to keep you motivated! And keep on innovating, that’s how we all move forward!
5) What can we expect from Niskerone in the weeks to come? What are we to look forward to?
Mark: In the next few weeks I have a bunch of shows around SA and Namibia, a new mix series launching in March, an upcoming European tour later this year, plus a single due just before the EU tour. Over the last few years I’ve spent time exploring the many different sides to bass music & the art of DJing itself, the philosophy behind it and figuring out creative ways to do it. It’s sort of a rabbit hole situation, but it’s left me feeling very inspired, so the next few weeks should be interesting!
