HQ’s Fine Wining Monthly Experience Reviewed.


Wednesday night was an unforgettable and delicious journey of the senses at HQ‘s third instalment this year of Fine Wining. The focus of the monthly gathering is to tantalize your taste buds with a decadent four-course meal – each course artfully paired with the finest local wine all while soaking in the stellar atmosphere at HQ. This month Boschendal took centre stage

Our evening kicked off with a welcome Chardonnay Pinot Noir, appetizing Salmon Roulade with Garlic Aioli canapés and an engaging open speech by the owner and winemakers themselves which gave us a more sophisticated understanding of what we were about to experience and enjoy. We were then ushered to our tables with the light and bluesy live vocals of Ricky Botsis jazzing up the atmosphere in the background.

First up, I was elated to be served HQ’s iconic Cos, parmesan, pine nuts and mustard vinaigrette salad, there was nothing to review here, this is undoubtedly my favourite salad ever, but when beautifully coupled with a glass of Boschendal 1685 Sauvignon Blanc 2017, the flavours were elevated to a whole new level tying together the parmesan, pine nuts and dijon mustard vinaigrette into one wonderous smack.

Served for mains was a generous glass of the full-bodied and velvety Boschendal 1685 Merlot 2016 paired with their signature 250g, 32-day wet-aged sirloin served alongside the quintessential HQ Café de Paris Butter and their heavenly skinny fries that just melt in your mouth. Together the combination was so… sultry, devilish almost and by this time, with all the wine going straight to my head, I was in full “over-indulge” mode and ready to smash dessert. It should also be noted that there is a scrumptious vegan option available for an alternative main course which includes mouthwatering Portabella mushrooms stuffed with a rich Duxelle and parmesan cheese and served with skinny fries.

Dessert was nothing short of sensational as we found ourselves tucked into a dark chocolate torte
covered in cocoa nib dust, sea salt and charred cherry ice-cream, served alongside the most sensational and unique glass of wine I’ve ever tasted – the Boschendal 1685 S&M 2015 – smooth, fruity and easy on the palate -definitely my favourite wine of the evening.

The event is perfect for everyone, family and friends and will take place on a monthly basis. We are definitely giving the overall experience an enthusiastic thumbs up and encourage all foodies and wine lovers alike to give it a go. For only R 295 per person, you can enjoy an evening of amazing music, sensational food and the very best local wine the country has to offer.
