Great Food and Wine is for the Weekend – De Grendel Wine Estate

Wine is for the weekend at De Grendel

If you are Capetonian, you know that when spring and summer roll around, weekends are meant to be spent sipping on wine on one of the many wine lands, having three-course lunches, and soaking up the sun. If you do not want to drive too far from Cape Town, we have the perfect solution for you: De Grendel Wine Estate.

With unobstructed views of the city, sea, and Table Mountain, you can head over there mid-morning, take a seat on their balcony and enjoy a morning of wine tasting; but for us, it is all about pairing that wine with amazing food, so we made sure to book a table at their restaurant.

Make your way down the ramp, passing by their impressive wine cellars, and make your way to a rustic and elegant restaurant, with more views of Table Mountain and the wine estate.

While their menu is host to a number of fresh ingredients and local produce, which leave the final product as a surprise, a few items stood out to us. The langoustine starter with crispy pancetta, thinly sliced fresh radish, and honey miso grilled corn, dressed with smoked aubergine and tahini and infused with tom yum. The langoustine was so tender it almost melted in your mouth. The main that stood out to us was the grilled lamb loin, served with crispy smoked lamb on the side, crumbed and fried sweetbreads, broccolini, roast new potato and a courgette, dressed in a fresh mint puree. For dessert, we opted for something light and fresh: the lime posset. Perfectly creamy, and sweet, cut through with sharp lime, garnished with meringues, candied ginger, coconut milk, and fresh fruit, ranging from kiwi to blueberries and gooseberries, topped with a magnificent sweet and tart passion fruit sorbet.

And no matter what you have, it has to be paired with one of their many wines! It is the weekend after all!

The fresh ingredients and farm to table mindset come through in every dish with the care it is made and plated with, beautifully presented, by some of the friendliest staff!

The Sunday lunch menu comes with either a 2-course meal at R350, or a three-course meal with R385, and we think it is a special not worth missing out on!

Watch out for their ever-changing menu, and lunch specials. This is an easy 5 from us!
