The Gautrain, although it’s been slow with expansion, it has become an integral part of many Gauteng residents daily lives since it first launched back in June 2012.
Last year the GMA announced that it would be conducting a feasibility study into the expansion of the network and stated they would also need twelve new train sets. The new routes would include stops at Lanseria and East Rand Mall in Johannesburg as well stops at Mamelodi and Irene in Pretoria.
Speaking to BusinessTech, GMA senior executive manager for communication and marketing, Dr Barbara Jensen, confirmed that the feasibility study is complete and has been submitted to the National Treasury for approval.“Once approval has been granted the planning and Environmental Impact Assessment of Phase 1 will begin,” she said.

Travelling at a maximum speed of 160 kilometres per hour, Gautrain connects Hatfield station with Johannesburg Park station in approximately 42 minutes, and Sandton station with the OR Tambo International Airport in less than 15 minutes.
