The COVID-19 pandemic has just about crippled the global event industry. With no actual stages to perform on most artists have reverted to performing their live work across social media platforms. But it looks like the influx of Dj livestreams has prompted Facebook to update their terms of service agreement and clamp down on what the platform refers to as “music listening experiences.”

On October 1st, Facebook will update it’s TOS with a clause that could potentially have a major impact on the DJ Livestreams. According to the update, users will not be able to use videos on Facebook’s products (FB and IG) to create a music listening experience.

“We want you to be able to enjoy videos posted by family and friends,” the update reads. “However, if you use videos on our products to create a music listening experience for yourself or for others, your videos will be blocked and your page, profile or group may be deleted. This includes Live.”

“If you post content that contains music owned by someone else, your content may be blocked or may be reviewed by the applicable rights owner and removed if your use of that music is not properly authorized.”

It’s worth noting that Facebook already does this type of policing on uploaded and live videos, removing or muting any piece of audio it deems in violation of its copyright terms. But what the TOS will do is codify these violations and their repercussions, making it harder to appeal them.

What’s the next best bet for DJ livestreams? Mixcloud Live and Youtube. Mixcloud Live is designed for music streams. It’s 100% legal but requires a monthly subscription and it might be tougher to gain a wider audience on Mixcloud than YouTube.
