Escape to Agulhas Country Lodge and explore the untouched beauty of the southernmost point of Africa

If you’re seeking to escape the city to a place where stillness and untouched beauty awaits you then pack your bags and make your way to the southernmost point of Africa for some quietude at the Agulhas Country Lodge.

Don’t expect gratuitous frills or modern-day flattery, because Agulhas Country Lodge is anything but a clinical hotel experience, it’s the kind of place that offers warmth and comfort and invites guests to truly unwind in a home-away-from-home atmosphere all while providing a high-end experience through their cuisine, excellent service and amenities.

The lodge is built entirely from natural limestone that merges into the backdrop of the rocking slope it’s set upon. Agulhas Country Lodge‘s “cabin-in-a-mountain” aesthetic coupled with its breathtaking views and secludedness make it the closest off-the-grid experience you’ll experience without having to go off and camp in the wilderness.

The 4-star lodge situated in Africa’s most southern coastal village enamoured my senses from the moment we arrived and I opened up my private balcony to a panoramic ocean view. With the beach within direct walking distance from where I stood – I knew this was the perfect destination for me to unplug my digital brain for a few days and just breathe.

Tying in the natural outdoor textures surrounding the landscape with the wooden and rocky interiors of the lodge create a sort of zen, the lodge almost becoming an effortless extension of its earthly surroundings.

The rooms are private, quiet, clean and quaint and are equipped with heaters, flat-screen TVs with DSTV, quality mattresses with the most heavenly linen and glorious stone-tiled jacuzzi bathtubs with massage jets.

Dining at the Agulhas Country Lodge is a wholesome adventure of the senses as the staff take great pride in preparing gourmet country-style dinners and traditional local cuisine with a modern flare served in their romantic candlelit restaurant. The lodge also has a selection of South African wines to complement any meal. Their collection features wines from the southernmost and newest wine region in the country- the Elim, Bredasdorp, Napier region of the Overberg.

The upstairs common area boasts a quaint pub with an air force/maritime theme – all personal memorabilia belonging to the owner himself who enthralled us with his fascinating stories about the history of L’Agulhas.

Breakfast was a favourite during our stay; freshly-baked croissants with a continental spread of finely cured meat, cheeses, fruits and homemade muesli, teamed with freshly squeezed fruit juice and a full-bodied coffee are the perfect way to start a day filled with exploring the untouched wilderness of L’Agulhas.

Activities are aplenty in L’Agulhas – swimming at the longest uninterrupted white beach in Southern Africa at nearby Struisbaai is a popular activity. There are also two tidal pools within walking distance of the hotel and the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa is just a stone’s throw away.

Taking an adventure through the picturesque region of L’Agulhas wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t explore the untouched natural beauty of The Agulhas National Park – a region protected for its diverse fauna and flora. The name “Agulhas” derives from the Portuguese for “needles” and is said to have been given to the cape because the compass-needle was seen to point due north, that is, with no magnetic deviation.

The trail along the coastline is uncharted beauty with pebble stone beaches and relic-like rocks piercing out of the ocean. Along the trail, you’ll find yourself at the very point where the two oceans meet – a magical point in space where the stillness and novelty are refreshing. The legendary shipwreck is another must-see; barren and rusted with the most beautiful hues of yellow and red, sitting motionless and solitary amongst the crashing waves. Our trek eventually took us all the way down to the famous little fishing village of Struisbaai with its immaculate and secluded beaches. The landscape and natural beauty of the region are exactly what you come to L’Agulhas for – the atmosphere of the town is serene and effervescent – a getaway for genuine rejuvenation and discovering untouched nature at it’s best.
