EP of the Week| Phaze – Awakening EP

Phaze returns with the epic “Awakening EP”, which kicks off with Cosmos. Opening with some solid, space-age vibes, this one is adorned with some nice vocal snatches, and a booming, galaxy-filling bassline, which is topped by a regular beat and catches of break.

Coming fast on Cosmos’ heels is Triplet Skanker, which is another futuristic slab of funk, existing at the junction point between bass music styles. Riffing along on some mean triplets, this one won’t let the dancefloor down. Varying tempo works well from the off, and the pay off after the build is just amazing.

Phaze then invites you to Get Real on the next track, which lifts off from a smooth, liquid-inspired opening. Filtered vox flow around some livesounding bass, before the track drops into the main section. This is perhaps the EP’s best track, and is sure to put Philosophy firmly on the map.

Generator is next, chock full of glitchy electro vibes. Different, but still very much fitting into the vibe and feeling of the EP, the track shows off the versatility of Phaze’s production work. The quite beautiful Deception is another turn in the road, taking us back down a drum & bass path, with some tinkling effects around the rolling beats, and sweeping female vocals, and epic, moving melodies completing the picture. The last track on the EP is the cinematic Eternal Dream, once again a co-production with Kamashe. Light and effortless, the track skips along on a simple beat, but it is in the samples, pads and atmospherics that this one comes alive. Reminiscent of the work of Ramses B or Macca, this one alone makes the Awakening an essential purchase!

Always up for a party and a Tequila shot or two this is the guy who we always call first, both before and after a night out…
