Netflix has been a saving grace of escape and entertainment during this tumultuous time but you’ve probably noticed by now that Netflix uses a really strange system to categorize their films and tv shows. It always seems like you’ve watched everything already, or that there isn’t much content on the site to begin with?
But that isn’t the case. You’ll find really limited results if you keep “searching” the standard way and will always have to refer to Google for audience and critic scores instead of relying on Netlix’s so-called ‘match percentages.’ But with everything in life, there are loopholes and if you know these nifty Netflix hacks, your viewing experience is about to get a whole lot better.
From adding legitimate ratings to your content to unlocking hidden movies and watching your favourites with friends and family (remotely, of course) here are 7 Netflix hacks you probably don’t use but should:
1. ADD ROTTEN TOMATOES RATINGS, IMDB LINKS, AND TRAILERS
If you want to instant access to legit reviews and ratings then the Netflix Enhancement Suite – a free Google Chrome extension – if for you. According to Thrillist, it’s a smorgasbord of vital add-ons in one package. From pop-up ratings from Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes to IMDb profiles and trailers for every title. Get NHS right here.
2. USE AN UNBLOCKER TO GET OTHER CONTENT FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
Watch content that’s not available in South Africa by either using a VPN service and unblockers like Smartflix. Unblockers have landed in some hot water recently over security issues, so unblock at your own risk. Check out Smartflix, for free, here.
3. PLAY NETFLIX ROULETTE
Netflix Roulette is a fantastic and free website for those days when you simply can’t decide or find something – as mentioned finding content on Netflix is like a treasure hunt- to watch. The website allows you to choose directors, actors, keywords, genres and ratings before it chooses a film for you. Check it out right here.
4. CUSTOMIZE YOUR SUBTITLES
A Netflix hack for foreign film enthusiasts: you can adjust the default Netflix subtitles to change colour, size, font, and more based on your preferences. All you need to do is go to Your Account > Your Profile > Subtitle Appearance and customise away!
5. WATCH WITH FRIENDS/FAMILY REMOTELY USING ‘RABBIT’ AND ‘NETFLIX PARTY’
This is perfect for movie nights with friends and family during the lockdown. The video-chat service Rabbit is a great alternative to other video chat platforms as it allows users to launch a window that can be viewed by all others in the chat. So you can launch your favourite shows and movies and watch it together with another window open to video chat and message in real-time.
Similarly, Netflix launched it’s group-viewing platform ‘Netflix Party‘ which is a free extension that also allows groups of friends and family to view the same content simultaneously. You can read more about Netflix Party right here.
6. USE THE ‘NETFLIX BIBLE’
A while back we wrote an article detailing how to use codes to unlock content that Netflix’s algorithms wouldn’t otherwise show you. Now dubbed the ‘Netflix Bible’ – a long list of codes you can use to access an encyclopedia of strange and interesting subgenres that would never show up on your standard searches. You can access all these Netflix codes right here.
7. CONSULT REDDIT
If you want to honest audience reviews, check out the dedicated subreddit r/NetflixBestOf – which, according to Thrillist, “features a frighteningly motivated community of film and television fans that provides constant recommendations on notable titles they’ve stumbled across.”
