For a large part of my teen years, metal and rock were the only genres I paid any attention to. As a regular at the Wynberg under-18 metal events and an avid collector of rock magazines, CDs and merch I never imagined a life outside of this subculture. Cape Town was a breeding ground for interesting bands and there was no shortage of events and quality venues representing this end of the musical market. Fast-forward a decade and you will notice a huge shift has taken place. Gone are the days of queueing for hours at Assembly, Mercury, Zula or Gandalf’s to hear your favourite international and local bands tear the roof off. Like it or not, the electronic music industry has infiltrated and subsequently dominated the local music scene over the past few years. Despite this being a sore point for many of the city’s musicians and die-hard band supporters, it has re-opened a small door for passionate musos to re-invigorate the scene in a way that is unique and exciting even to those who haven’t been to a live show in years.

Back in 2012, Psych Night began to rear its head in a market that, at the time, was dominated by larger commercial ‘stadium’ bands. However, it didn’t take long before the town was scattered with their attention-grabbing posters and their unique events started to pop up at some of the city’s most prominent establishments. In a short space of time, the team managed to claim a niche part of a culture, which as mentioned, was seeing a huge decline in support. They daringly brought down international acts that they felt passionate about and supported esoteric local artists (many of whom are now seeing global recognition).

Personally, it took a while for my faith in the local live-music scene to be restored. Besides for my foray into electronic music, I struggled to find something that excited me as much as rock and metal did in my high-school years. However, it took two separate visits to two different local tattoo parlours for this to change. A few years ago I was in the hot seat at Raoul Goetze’s Palm Black getting my elbow inked up. As one the founders of Psych Night, it was fitting that the shop’s music was curated inline with his personal tastes. Amongst the buzzing, I was listening to this fantastic music that seemed to be both vintage and modern, psychedelic and grungy yet also warm and relaxing. Admittedly, I was too shy to ask what I was listening to – however, when I paid a visit to Tomb Tattoo about a year later I heard this distinct sound again! This time, I plucked up the courage to ask what was playing. It was The Growlers. This became my first introduction to a new wave of bands exploring sounds of the past in a fresh way. I felt my energy to explore and dig for new rock music coming back again, all the while Psych Night had been punting it for years!

Needless to say, when I saw the announcement of the second edition of Psych Night’s outdoor festival ‘Endless Daze’ I knew I had to get involved. With around 30 artists on board (3 of which are international), this event stands strong amongst some of the cities larger and more extravagant festivals. Their booking of The Oh Sees, one of the contemporary bands at the pinnacle of this sound, is a clear sign of the team’s integrity and drive to remain unique, whilst the inclusion of US pair Moon Duo is indicative of the brand’s penchant for musical diversity. In addition, the local line-up is a fantastic blend of newcomers and veterans, many of whom operate under-the-radar and will now receive a well-deserved outlet for their creativity. ‘Rock’ fan or not, I urge you all to support this festival as it continues to cement itself in the local events calendar!
