This Friday will see the release of the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Cane and Morgan Freeman will all reprise their roles from the first two films, which is set to tell the tale of the epic conclusion to this series of Batman films.
Now those that have seen the first two movies will know that Batman Begins was very good, The Dark Knight was great, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one looking forward to this final chapter with immense anticipation.
It’s director Christopher Nolan’s first film following Inception, a resounding critical and commercial success which won four Oscars at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011. Filming took place between May and November 2011, across three continents and four countries; taking the cast and crew fromIndia toEngland andScotland, before returning to the States to complete principal photography inPittsburgh,Los Angeles andNew York City.
The film will tell the story of Batman’s exile from and subsequent return to Gotham City following events in the last film, and how he will have to defend Gotham City from Bane, a terrorist mastermind intent on destroying the city.
Check out the trailer and 13-minute preview clip below, which shows some behind-the-scenes footage featuring the cast and crew during filming and production. Watching that 13-minute clip reveals the true magnitude and scope of this project, and gives one a better idea of what it took to create some of the incredible sets, scenes and visual effects that will be seen in the movie.
It’s quite clearly a massive project, with a huge budget (estimated at $250 million), the same excellent director and principal cast from the first two films in the series. The Dark Knight was a brilliant film, it set an extremely high standard for this next one to live up to if its going to match it, but if The Dark Knight Rises can reach or eclipse that level (and I have a feeling it will), then I think we’re in for a real treat!
Release date in South Africa: Friday 27th July 2012.
