When I was a youth all that I could think about was making it as musician, but back then it was more difficult to get your stuff heard by someone that counts than it was to get into the Nkandla for lunch. Thankfully, last year Converse did away with process and welcomed Youtube and Soundcloud demo submissions from 138 unsigned, local bands from a variety of genres as part of their Get Out of the Garage competition. The winner, Matthew Mole had the chance to record in New York and play at the iconic 100 Club in London and now the competition is back in its second year searching for the next big thing.
In 2013 Converse is on the hunt for unsigned talent to get out of the garage and be transported to the UK to play the epic 100 Club venue later this year, record with Rubber Tracks in New York and tear the Rocking The Daisies festival apart on stage while lapping up the adoration of fans in crowd. Whether you are a punk rocker, electro nut, kickass proponent of kwaito, or a hip hop head, Converse wants to hear your sound.
From the 1st of July until the 26th July, visit www.facebook.com/converse and upload a Soundcloud version of your best track. Then on the 1st of August judges, Catherine Grenfell, Jon Savage, and Reason will narrow down the entries to SA’s Top 10 unsigned artists. Converse will then showcase these acts on Facebook, where South African music fans can vote for their favourite. Simply by voting, fans have a chance to join their favourite band VIP style to London for the gig.
Get Out Of The Garage, share your music and showcase your talent via the app at www.facebook.com/converse and be part of the conversation on Twitter @Converse_Africa with the #Play100Club hashtag. The overall winner will be announced on the 2nd of September 2013 and will soon after take the stage at Rocking the Daisies 2013.
What a freakin’ prize, what a freakin’ competition. Come on peeps, here’s your chance to get discovered.
