Comics Against Cancer at Beautifull Life, 19th July 2012

Comedians are like thieves… in the way that they stick together for the fold until it means doing time. South Africa’s comics have joined forces for a Comedy Evening for Rustum August, happening on the 19th July 2012, at Beautifull Life in Bree Street.

Capetonians are going to be in for a comedy treat as some of the biggest names in South African comedy come together for a one night only, not to be missed, fundraising event to help fellow comedian Rustum August who’s having a personal battle with cancer. As one of the founders the Starving Comics, he can be credited with restarting the club comedy circuit in Cape Town and, more importantly, keeping it going. A voracious promoter, almost all of the new comics of the last three years owe their start and continued presence on the comedy scene to him and he has been sorely missed since being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in May 2012. The current prognosis is good, but as he has no medical aid (getting benefits is difficult unless you are Trevor Noah), he requires R90 000 for an operation on his lungs that will hopefully save his life.

As it turns out, laughter isn’t the best medicine: it’s money! Corne and Twakkie (Louw Venter and Rob van Vuuren), Stuart Taylor, Siv Ngesi, Tracey Klaas, Oliver Booth, Martin Davis and Brendan Murray will be there in person to make you laugh so hard it falls out your pockets. Problem solved. With a few video appearances by other heavyweight comics who could only be there in spirit it’s an evening not to be missed. Please help the comedians of Cape Town give a little something back to the guy who gave them so much of himself.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated by Youngblood Arts & Culture Development to the Friends of Rustum August (FORA) to pay for his lung operation but magnanimous individuals and companies are encouraged to dig deep and contribute to the ongoing lifesaving treatment for Rustum.
