If you haven’t tapped into Johannesburg’s comedy scene yet you are missing out on a big part of the city’s nightlife. On almost (if not every) night in Joburg you can find a great comedy show at super low prices.
Comedy has always been a big part of South African culture, but has only really been getting the attention it deserves since Trevor Noah’s big break on Saturday Night Live. For the longest time South Africa’s best comedians were performing in underground places for only the true lovers of comedy who sought them out. But since 2014 Goliath & Goliath started investing in creating more platforms for comedians in SA. If you don’t know who the Goliaths are its actually a pretty funny quartet; the group consists of brother and sister Jason and Kate Goliath, their cousin Nicholas Goliath and Donovan Goliath who is not actually related to the three of them despite having the same surname.
Comedy is the BEST night out and a great way to start your night if you are planning on having a late night in the club.
My absolute favourite South African comedian is Loyisa Madinga. In 2012 he was the winner of the Graça Comedy Showdown awards, and more recently was handpicked by Trevor Noah to be Africa’s corresponded to The Daily Show. He also happens to have some super smooth moves on the dance floor!
My other favourite SA comedians who are making waves all over the globe are; Virgil Prins, known just as Prins; the comedian with the thickest Cape accent, Donovan Goliath who looks white but is actually coloured, grew up in Mthatha and speaks fluent Xhosa (true story) and Robby Collins who kinda looks a bit like Trevor Noah and is just effortless in his delivery on stage.
Here are the best places to and catch these guys and when;
Poppy’s in Melville has comedy on every Monday night and it is completely free. Melville is also full of really amazing restaurants so if you want to get something to eat before during or after the show you will not be disappointed for choice.
Kitcheners in Braamfontein has a ‘new material night’ every Tuesday and costs just R20. This is one of the oldest bars in Johannesburg and always has an incredible atmosphere and great food.
The Goliath Comedy Club is open for comedy on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Situated at Melrose Arch, this stunning, quirky venue shares its home with Roast Café, a restaurant which is open every day for cakes, delicious meals and cocktails and at really great prices!
