Born in the 80s and based in Berlin, solo artist and bandleader, Jan Blomqvist is something of a maverick in the electronic music scene. It was him who invented concert techno; which can only be described as music with dreamy vocals and seamless melodic beats. When performing as the band, BLOMQVIST, Jan is into dancy electro-pop, and as a solo artist, he plays club soul.
As a kid, Jan never cried – he sang. Having ‘hippie’ parents, he received his first guitar at a young age and learned to play like Keith Richards, deciding later that he’d rather be more like Mick Jagger. With his first bit of money earned, Jan bought an amplifier and he went on to form his first band in Lower Saxony, a small village in Germany.
Growing up, Jan was influenced by many styles of music that has played a significant role in the uniqueness of his sound today; with the Punk genre forming a mentionable part of this journey. At age 21, and on track to a career in aerospace technology, Jan got acquainted with Techno, and it dawned on him that music could be a profession.
In the day, Jan sleeps, and at night, he produces music for hours on end. In the earlier stages of his career, he worked as a bartender and spent his money on “educational” trips; Radiohead open-air concerts, Bar25 and After Hours to name a few. Jan set out “to shatter the boredom in the clubs, to bring a concert feel to their dance floors, with simple vocals and minimal beats…everything kept simple with finesse en detail.”
In 2011, Jan landed gigs that entailed performing for crowds as big as 3000 people and to venues as intimate as city rooftops, where he was filmed for a YouTube video that achieved viral status.
Jan went on to performing 350 gigs in the space of three years and he remembers them all; New York, Moscow, Paris, Istanbul, Los Angeles, Beirut, Mexico, Copenhagen, Milan, London and many more.
In the studio, Jan draws from his experiences playing live. His music is always filled with that characteristic ‘Jan Blomqvist feel’. A journey that gives the feeling of dancing on a rooftop terrace against the backdrop of the sun setting behind dark clouds or driving on the open road suddenly hooked and nodding in time to the infectious sound of his breathy melodies, soulful vocals, and his minimally sloping sound that gives you goosebumps.
